Dole began in Hawaii in 1851 when James Dole bought some land and harvested a crop of sweet juicy pineapples. He shipped them back to the continental United States and built a company whose reputation was based on quality.

Today, the company's nearly 200 products are distributed in more than 90 countries. As of January 2, 2010, the company employs approximately 39,100 full-time, permanent employees and 36,500 full-time, seasonal or temporary workers worldwide.

All of Dole's delicious fresh fruit sold in New Zealand are produced in the Philippines on Dole-managed farms and third party farms.
