Hey kids, this is the place to find out how to look after our bodies and keep them fit and healthy. Your body needs fuel to keep it going and we get that fuel from the foods we eat. So it makes sense to make sure we put the right stuff in our fuel tank – our tummy.
Different foods give us different nutrients so you have to eat a variety of foods.
Fruit and vegetables are the finest foods we have. They contain lots of vitamins and minerals, which the body needs to keep it efficient and clean on the inside, and to fight off disease. It is really important that you get enough fruit and vegetables, at least 2 servings of fruit and 3 of vegetables every day. A serving is the amount that fits into your hand. It is a good idea to choose different coloured fruits and vegetables rather than just eating carrots or only eating apples as each colour means the fruit or vegetable has different goodies inside it to help our bodies.
Cereals and breads are part of a group that is high in carbohydrates and you need about 4 or 5 servings a day from this group. (A serving is about a cup of cereal or a slice of bread)
Dairy products like milk, yoghurt, and cheese are great for growing bones and you should be eating 2 to 3 servings a day. (A serving size would be a cup of milk, 1 pot of yoghurt, or 2 slices of cheese)
Lean meat and fish, poultry (chicken), seafood, eggs nuts and seeds, beans and lentils form one group of foods. You should eat something from this group every day.
Food is the fuel for your body and we talk about the food in terms of 'calories', which are a form of energy. We need this energy just to breathe in and out, stand up and move around and stuff.
So how do you know when you have had enough food? Next time you have something to eat, notice how your body feels. Is your tummy full or does it feel a bit uncomfortable? Sometimes we don't notice that we have eaten too much food, especially if we are doing something else as well, like watching TV or playing video games. The amount of food you need will be different to everyone else, and it will depend on how much activity you are doing. If you run around a lot or play heaps of sport, you probably need more fuel than your friend who may spend more time inside watching TV. If you eat more food and get more calories than you need you may put on too much weight as the extra calories may be stored as fat in your body.
While we are on the subject of fuel, don't forget you need water to make sure your body runs well. Water is definitely the number one drink when you are thirsty but milk is also good for you as it is full of calcium the mineral that helps grow strong bones and teeth. It's ok to have a little 100% juice every so often but try not to drink too many fizzy soft drinks or sugary fruit drinks as they don't have a lot of nutrients and they're not good for your teeth either.
Now we all know that there are some foods that are better for us than others but eating the right foods is not the only thing we need to do to keep our bodies working properly. Exercise, helps you build a strong body that will be able to move around and do all the stuff you need it to do. It's good to be active every day so try to find out what sort of activity you like best. Not all of you will love sports but you might love dancing or playing with your mates or walking the dog, so find out what suits you and try to do something every day.
