a fresh new flavour
Dole Paradise Plantains are a variety of high quality green banana, now available in New Zealand. In many tropical countries, green plantains are a staple in the daily diet. They are used as the starch in a meal, as we would use potatoes, kumara, rice or pasta. A plantain is a fresh carbohydrate with starchy properties, which you can cook and eat in many ways - just like a potato.
Plantains are high in fibre and are a source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin A and vitamin C. Learn more
They are amazingly versatile because, as they ripen, they change colour from green to yellow and eventually black, getting sweeter at each stage, so that they can also be used in dessert recipes. So, be adventurous, try them at each stage of their ripening, and we're sure you'll want to add Dole Paradise Plantains to your weekly shop.
You will find Dole Paradise Plantains in the fruit and vegetable section of your supermarket or independent greengrocer. Buy them green and firm and use them straight away for savoury dishes. If required, ripen at home until yellow or almost black to be cooked for salads or in dessert recipes. Store like a regular Cavendish banana.
Green plantains are perfect for savoury dishes and can be boiled, steamed, sautéed, or fried. They make fabulous chips and are delicious mashed. The plantain's delicate flavour goes well with any meat, chicken, or fish, and is a fantastic complement to spicy recipes and great for vegetarian dishes.
Many dishes, both savoury and sweet, call for yellow plantains. As the plantain continues to ripen the skin turns darker (it may even turn black). At this point the plantain is very sweet and can be used in desserts, much like bananas. Check out the Paradise Plantain recipes on this site.
